Episode testing in our US Playlabs to improve audience engagement

The Client

Guru Studio are an award winning animation studio based in Toronto who produce kids animations including the hugely successful Paw Patrol and many others.

The Brief

Guru Studio wanted to continue its success by understanding how to further improve its hugely successful True and the Rainbow Kingdom animation on Netflix.

The Approach

We audited audience behaviour via Dubit Trends to understand existing awareness, and audiences with the potential to engage. This led into a series of PlayLab sessions in the USA to observe children and parents watching multiple episodes of the series. By testing engagement throughout the episode against pre-agreed times stamps we were able to identify how and why the content engaged and disengaged children. This allowed us to recommend how to further enhance the episodes with recommendations about how to improve those less engaging moments.

The Work

In addition to recommending how to further enhance narrative, characters and themes, we also provided engagement scores to compare True’s performance against key competitors. True and the Rainbow Kingdom has been commissioned for a third Netflix season.
